Since May 27, 558 prisoners were released under amnesty announced by the President on occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Armenia. At the same time, 323 prisoners had their sentence cut.
As of July 9, prisoners were released from jails in Nubarashen (67), Erebuni (118), in Vardashen (34), from Hospital for Convicted (31), Artik (48), Vanadzor (19), Sevan (71), Hrazdan (32), Abovyan (7), Goris (16) and Kosh (115).
The process is still under way.
In May 2011, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan applied to the National Assembly with proposal to declare amnesty on occasion of the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s Independence. The President’s proposal is based on article 81.1of the RA Constitution and article 90 of the law on National Assembly regulations. With a vote 91-0 the Armenian Parliament approved the presidential proposal.
