20.10.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Late on the evening of October 19 the House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who is considered as an active supporter of the Armenian resolution issued a special statement. The speaker stated that he pulled the Armenian Genocide resolution from the agenda of the House of Representatives for the remainder of the 106th Congress, thus killing the resolution.
In his statement, the Speaker says that the reason was the letter sent to him by the President Clinton who stated that the adoption of the resolution might affect the “national security of the US relating to the ongoing Middle East Peace process.
“Every patriotic American should heed the president’s request,” Hastert said in a statement.
“I think it’s outrageous that the Clinton administration has bowed to these threats from Turkey. … It sets a very dangerous precedent,” said Ross Vartian, executive director of the Armenian Assembly of America. –0–
