During the Shushi-hosted BarCamp Artsakh 2011 informal conference, which was dedicated to informational technologies, blogger and informational security specialist Samvel Martirosyan briefed on less popular search engines.
According to Martirosyan, there is stereotype among Armenians that “Search means Google.”
“Search is not Google or Yandex only,” he said.
As Martirosyan noted, Google provides enlarged search which is not very popular, as for instance the “social search” function. “If social search is needed there are a number of special social search systems, as topsy.com, socialmention.com or snapbird.org with the latter conducting search only in Twitter,” he said.
The blogger also presented audio, video and PDF search systems. “For example, one can find only audio files in FindSounds.com and choose any format – mp3, wav, etc. greatpdf.com is a great engine for PDF file searches,” he said.
As to business search he mentioned biznar.com which conducts smart search classifying files according to topics. Martirosyan also mentioned WolframAlpha, which conducts smart search. “If for instance you search Artsakh, it does not limit with presenting links, it automatically collects material, prepares and joins data in one page.”
The event was organized by Educational Foundation of Artsakh, through the assistance of the Ministry of Culture and Youth Affairs of Nagorno Karabakh. Internet access was provided by Arminco company.
