“WE WELCOME THE DECISION OF THE HOUSE COMMITTEE”, ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTER STATED TODAY

04.10.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. “We welcome the decision of the U.S. Congress Committee for International Relations regarding the recognition of the Armenian Resolution”, stated today the Foreign Minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian at a press conference in Yerevan.
Minister Oskanian stated that Yerevan considers the process of recognition of the Resolution as “a result of democratic cooperation of a part of the American society and American legislators”. The foreign minister stressed that Armenia does not agree with the opinion that the recognition of this Resolution may impede the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. “On the contrary, the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, including on the part of Turkey as well, will help overcome contradictions between the two nations, will promote the process of reconciliation and the establishing of long-term peace in the region”, said the Armenian minister.
Vardan Oskanian noted that Armenia has never considered the question of recognition of the Armenian genocide as a preliminary condition in the process of normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations. According to him, Armenia has always suggested Turkey to start a dialogue and discuss not only the problem of the genocide, but also all the other questions which are of great regional importance for both the sides. “Today I once again make a suggestion to my Turkish counterpart Mr. Cem to begin such a dialogue”, said Minister Oskanian. -0-
