22.09.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Joining Russia-Belarus union should not be an end in itself, said President of Armenia Robert Kocharian in the interview to Russian “Ivzestiya” paper, which was published today.
Armenian President said that Armenian-Belarusian and Armenian-Russian relations “are developing dynamically enough, they have much in common, but at the same time they differ in many respects”. There is no need to accelerate processes artificially, Kocharian said.
President noted that main political powers in the Armenian parliament support the present course – “Russia is undoubtedly our strategic ally, but there is no political or any other necessity to join the union of Russia and Belarus”.
“The only party, which is basically against such an approach and is speaking with an initiative to join Russia-Belarus union, makes up a small parliamentary faction and can’t be a determinant in this question. Joining this union should not be an end in itself. Such a serious political step can’t be realized on the emotional basis. One must realistically think what we will gain by this in solving everyday problems in Armenia and Russia”, said Robert Kocharian. -0-
