FIRE EXCHANGE ON ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER

13.09.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. An armed incident took place on Monday on the Armenian-Turkish border, guarded by sub-units of the Federal Frontier Service (FFS) of Russia.
Three Turkish servicemen “crossed the line of the state border and advanced into the Armenian territory passing some 300 meters”, was reported to “Vremya Novostey” paper in the headquarters of FFS. On the attempt of the Russian border detail to keep back the trespassers, the Turkish answered with firing, after what the Russian frontier guards opened warning fire as well.
Several outposts of the Gyumri frontier detachment, on the zone of which took place the incident, have passed to intensified service regime: they are ordered to maintain increased action readiness.
The FFS headquarters is not inclined to dramatize the situation – at least, the leadership of the frontier group “Armenia” hasn’t yet turned for help to the Russian army sub-units stationed in the republic. The stationed in Gyumri 102nd Russian military base must come to the aid of the frontier guards only in case of a serious crisis.
For 1999 all the 4 Russian frontier detachments, serving in Armenia, have arrested 50 trespassers (35 of them tried to illegally cross to Armenia from Turkey, the other 15 – from Armenia to Turkey.
On June 17, 2000 Russian Sergeant-Contractor Anatoly Zyablikov was killed by the Turkish frontier guards on the zone of the Armavir detachment. -0-
