08.09.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who is in New York, had a meeting with representatives of U.S. Jewish community.
According to Turkish NTV TV-company, President Sezer expressed his pleasure over the support US Jews had given Turkey in fighting Turkey’s enemies over the years.
At a press conference following the meeting, Presidential Office Director and Head Consultant to the Ministry of State, Tacan Idem said that the issue of possible recognizing of the Genocide of Armenians of 1915 by the U.S. Congress was also included in the agenda of the meeting. President Sezer said he hoped the Jewish community would support the Turkish position in this issue, said Idem. The Turkish President expressed his pleasure at the close and fruitful cooperative relations between the Turkish and Jewish communities in the United States, and said he hoped that these same determined cooperative relations would continue in the future “to act cohesively against elements destructive to Turkey’s interests”.
The upcoming discussion of the issue of recognizing the Genocide of Armenians of 1915 by the U.S. Congress may become one of the highlights at the meeting of U.S. and Turkish presidents, which will be held in New York within the UN Millenium Summit framework, reported the Turkish Anatolian news agency on September 5 quoting diplomatic sources. It was expected that Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer would request Clinton to launch initiatives to prevent the Armenian draft being adopted by the U.S. Congress, emphasizing “the sensitivity Turkey feels over this issue”. -0-
