THE AGENCY OF DEVELOPMENT AND TRADE OF THE USA SPONSORS THE RESUMPTION OF SUGAR PRODUCTION IN ARMENIA

29.08.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The Agency of Development and Trade of the United States will allot a grant of 250.000 dollars to the national union of cooperative communities of Armenia to investigate resumption possibilities of sugar production in Armenia, was reported to MEDIAMAX in the press service of the US Embassy in Armenia.
On August 30 a memorandum of mutual understanding will be signed on this in Yerevan.
Before the earthquake of 1988, there was sugar production in Armenia which fully answered the demands in the local market. Today the annual sugar consumption in Armenia has reached 90.000 tons, the bulk of which is imported from Brazil, Iran and Turkey.
Armenian Government considers the resumption of sugar production a priority task.
The investigation, sponsored by the Agency of Development and Trade of the USA, will help assess the possibilities of sugar processing in the towns of Spitak and Gyumri.
This production will be able to produce minimum 100.000 tons of sugar each year, which will meet the present and future demands of Armenia. -0-
