MOSCOW MAY COUNT ON OPPOSITION POLITICIAN ARTASHES GEGHAMIAN, ARMENIAN MASS MEDIA THINK

22.08.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. “Artashes Geghamian and his companions are
quite able to cause a scare to the West, which has already done much to consolidate its dominating position on the territory of Armenia”, writes today “Golos Armenii” Yerevan paper, commenting upon the reasons which made Artashes Geghamian, the leader of “Right and Unity” bloc, the deputy of the Armenian parliament, to appear in radical opposition to the authorities of Armenia.
According to the paper, Geghamian will be rather a convincing bearer of the Russian interests, if made to play the role of the leader of the aggressive opposition, trying to oppose pro-Russian orientation to the Western influence. “No doubt, Geghamian is a leader, and who knows, isn’t he the one Russia will count on tomorrow?”, concludes the paper.
Geghamian’s companion from “Right and Unity” bloc Hrant Khachatrian said in May 2000: “The West as a weapon of pressure on Armenia uses international financial organizations. While the weapon of pressure of Russia is her ability to stir up an anxiety in the political arena of Armenia with her positive or negative relations towards separate political circles of the country”. According to Khachatrian, “The politicians having in present the support on the part of Russia, are more protected in Armenia rather than the rest”.-0-
