18.08.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The delegation of Armenia, headed by the speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Armen Khachatrian, will take part in the first congress of the world parliament speakers, which starts on August 30 in the UN headquarters in New York, was reported to MEDIAMAX in the press service of the parliament of Armenia.
The congress aims to increase the role and importance of parliamentary diplomacy in the sphere of international policy and intergovernmental cooperation, as well as the participation of the parliamentarians in most important international negotiations. According to the organizers of the congress, the event may become a serious step for enlarging cooperation between Interparliamentary Union and UN.
In the course of the congress a declaration is planned to be adopted concerning international cooperation of the parliamentarians on the threshold of the third millenium.
Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General and Mike Moore, the Director of the World Trade Organization will make an opening speech at the congress. The speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia will also speak at the congress. -0-
