THE GEORGIAN-ARMENIAN BORDER IN SAMTSKHE-JAVAHETI REGION WILL BE PROTECTED BY SUBDIVISIONS OF LOCAL ARMENIANS

28.07.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. “We are worried that after the withdrawal of the Russian frontier troops from Georgia our Georgian colleagues will not be able to protect the border as safely as now”, declared today the Commander of the Frontier Troops of the National Security of Armenia Major-General Levon Stepanian in the interview to the parliamentary “Hayastani Hanrapetutyun” paper.
According to Mr. Stepanian, most recently there existed a problem on the Armenian-Georgian border. The thing is that Bagratashen sector of the border was protected by Georgian frontier troops formed by ethnic Azeris. According to Mr. Stepanian, this fact was not only psychologically insurmountable, but was also fraught with unforeseen consequences. ” Just imagine the consequences of a small squabble”, said General Stepanian.
According to Mr. Stepanian, in the course of his meetings with the commander of the Georgian frontier troops General-Lieutenant Valery Chkheidze the latter assured him that the border sector in Samtskhe-Javahati region, inhabited mainly by ethnic Armenians, will be protected by frontier subdivisions formed by local Armenians. -0-
