A monument to famous Armenian composer Komitas opens in the center of Paris today. As reported by Paris media, “To the memory of composer Komitas and the 1.5 million Armenians fallen victims of the first genocide of XX century” is engraved on the 6-meter high base of the bronze statue. The idea to erect the monument appeared already in early 80-es of the last century, but started being realized since 2001 after being approved by the Paris authorities. As stated by Paris Mayor Jean Tiberi, “it will be a monument to Armenian composer Komitas, who had survived the Genocide and died in France in 1935. Let us note that there are 34 monuments and squares perpetuating the memory of the victims of the monstrous crime in France, which has officially recognized the Armenian Genocide. As reported earlier, the opening of a monument to the Armenian Genocide victims in the center of Paris caused indignation of official Ankara, which considers “such actions pose a threat to the Turkish-French relations.”
