RUSSIA CALLED US TO SPEED UP REPEAL OF JACKSON/VANIK AMENDMENT

The Committee of the Council of Federation (CF) of Russia for International Affairs has addressed the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee calling to consider the repeal of the Jackson/Vanik amendment at its next sitting. In the opinion of chairman of the CF Committee Mikhail Margelov, “Novosti” Russian agency reported, most favorable preconditions are available today for repealing the amendment. According to the data of the Russian ministry of agriculture, having held a range of negotiations, Russia and the US are fully satisfied with the rules of poultry supplies to the Russian market from America. “Thus, the connecting of the problem of import of poultry from the US to Russia with the repeal of the Jackson/Vanik amendment is automatically no longer relevant,” the Committee chairman emphasized. It should be reminded that the amendment provides for limitations in trade with the countries of the former USSR, including with Armenia. Sanctions introduced against the USSR in 1974, being co-sponsored by Congressmen Jackson and Vanik, were due to the hampering of migration of Jews. Later the opponents of repeal of the sanctions explained their stand by the wish to attain waiving limitations of chicken leg export to Russia.
