SWITZERLAND OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IN OTTOMAN TURKEY

The National Council (Parliament) of Switzerland has passed a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey in 1915. The document text notes that the extermination of over one million Armenians via deportation and massacre upon the order of the Ottoman Empire authorities in the course of World War I is an irrefutable fact and on the scale and importance it corresponds exactly to the norms provided for by the UN Genocide Convention of 1948. While passing the resolution the Parliament stated that it works for reconciliation of Turks and Armenians, which can be reaching owing to a common view on historic truths. At the same time the resolution reminds there is no statute of limitation for crimes against humanity and the document contributes to struggle against denial. The Turkish foreign ministry has lodged a note of protest saying the whole responsibility for negative consequences in the bilateral relations falls upon Switzerland.
