The Azeri foreign ministry has expressed protest against the intention of Russia as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk group for settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict to form joint military groupings with Armenia – one of the parties to conflict. As reported by “day.az” agency, Baku called Russia to take a more constructive stand and do not build up the military potential of Armenia in the name of conflict settlement, establishment of peace, stability and mutual confidence in the region. According to the source, the official Baku protest is due to the statements Russian defense minister Sergey Ivanov made in Yerevan over expansion of the Armenian-Russian military cooperation, specifically on the intention to re-equip the 102-nd Russian military base in Gyumri Armenian city with prospects of creation of Russian-Armenian united military groupings. Such statements, which upset the balance of power in the South Caucasus and further exacerbate the complicated situation in the region, cannot leave the Azeri party indifferent, the foreign ministry of Azerbaijan considers.
