Expert: Russian FM’s statement rules out new war in Karabakh

The true meaning of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s statement regarding “refusal from maximalist positions in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement process refers to the threat of a new war in Karabakh, an Armenian expert said.

Commenting on the outcomes of the Sochi meeting, Lavrov noted that “the three leaders stressed the need to establish direct humanitarian, cultural and educational relations to restore and promote trust between Armenia and Azerbaijan and create favorable atmosphere for adoption of political decisions.”

Serzh Sargsyan, Dmitry Medvedev and Ilham Aliyev discussed the investigation mechanisms of contact line incidents, considering OSCE observers’ latest report. The presidents also noted development of humanitarian contacts between the conflicting parties as means to promote trust in Karabakh process.

According to political analyst Sergey Minasyan, the Azerbaijani leader, who previously said he will never accept the status quo in Karabakh, stepped back from his position by signing the above-mentioned statement.
