BAKU STILL CONCERNED OVER TURKISH PRESIDENT CONGRATULATING KOCHARIAN

The Azeri people continue expressing displeasure on Turkish president Ahmet Necdet Sezer congratulating Robert Kocharian on reelection as the Armenian president. As reported by “Turkish Daily News” agency Azeri ambassador to Turkey Mamed Aliyev stated. At the same time he reminded that in his time Sezer’s predecessor Suleiman Demirel had not responded to Robert Kocharian being elected as the president for the first time. In his words, the Azeri opposition is trying to use the fact to discredit the Aliyev leadership and it is apparent that the news on the congratulation caused opposition. Sezer’s telegram was also discussed by the Azeri parliament. Some parliamentarians expressed opinions that the Turkish leader’s telegram evidenced Ankara’s intention to establish economic relations with Armenia. Meanwhile, the ambassador emphasized such problems would not tell on “the firm strategic links” between Turkey and Azerbaijan.
