CSTO to focus on security in 2012

In 2011, CSTO efforts focused on laying mechanisms for crisis response, practical implementation of existing methods for states’ protection. Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Nikolai Bordyuzha said during a Yerevan-Moscow-Astana-Minsk-Kyiv-Chisinau teleconference.

“Business games on neutralization of crisis situation and implementation of peace-keeping missions were held in 2011 in this regard,” Secretary General said.

Bordyuzha mentioned that information security, tackling the illegal drug trafficking and illegal immigration have also been in CSTO’s focus. “Programs on CRRF arms were particularly important in 2011,” he added.

The CSTO Secretary General said development of mechanisms aimed at security provision will be in the CSTO spotlight in 2012.

Bordyuzha also touched upon the issue of Kazakhstan replacing Belarus as the CSTO chair saying Belarus has been active and efficient in chairing the organization.

“As to Kazakhstan, they have always come up with well thought-out offers,” he said.

Summing up the past year, Bordyuzha said that 34 agreements on armament purchase were signed during the year on preferential terms. “Purchase privileges provided to the countries totaled 10 million Euros,” CSTO Secretary General concluded.
