Heritage party secretary quits party over electoral list controversy

Secretary of the opposition Heritage party Karine Hakobyan informed the journalists she quits the party due to disagreement over the party’s electoral list published on March 18.

“This is an absolutely illogical and unfair list,” she pointed out. According to Hakobyan, as the party’s secretary, she is the third top member, she is responsible for it, and “the list should have reflected it”.

In particular, Hakobyan voiced disagreement over inclusion of young and unknown people in the list who shoved back experienced MPs like Armen Martirosyan and Anahit Bakhshyan. Many party members were discontented with this list, but decided to keep silent because they have gained popularity due to Raffi Hovannisian and the Heritage, she added.

Meanwhile, according to Hakobyan, Larisa Alaverdyan expressed her stance by quitting the election campaign.

In response to a journalist's question about the author of the list, Hakobyan saidHovannisian and several of his close allies have compiled it. Hakobyan also mentioned hertactic and strategic disagreements over the political fight the party has been pursuing.

Former secretary of Heritage said she has not decided her future activities yet saying she is rather a public figure than a politician. Also, if a new healthy political force emerges, she did not rule out her potential membership with it.

On March 18, Heritage opposition party hosted a board sitting, followed by a council session.

The session focused on party strategy at the oncoming parliamentary elections, with joint candidates list approved in accordance with prior agreement with Free Democrats party.

Among those nominated were Stepan Safaryan, Zaruhi Postanjyan, Armen Martirosyan, Ruben Hakobyan, Anahit Bakhshyan, Gagik Margaryan.

In a conversation with a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, Heritage spokesman Hovsep Khurshudyan refused to provide comments as to the fact that public figures, rather than current MPs, were listed first in the candidates list. As he noted, official explanations will be offered on March 20.
