Victor Soghomonyan, head of Armenia's former president Robert Kocharian’s office confirmed on March 19 that Robert Kocharian and Russian president-elect Vladimir Putin met in Moscow on March 18.
According to Haykakan Zhamanak daily, rumors were circulated that Putin and Kocharian discussed issues related to Armenia’s domestic political situation.
The paper’s reporter asked Eduard Sharmazanov, spokesman of the Republican Party of Armenia about RPA's attitude to this meeting. “It is a universal practice when retired presidents hold meetings with leaders of other countries or have certain participation in some processes, this is not something new,” Sharmazanov replied quoting several similar examples. “We take that normally, this is a common practice,” he added.
When asked whether this means that Kocharian intends to come back to power, Sharmazanov said: “This question should be addressed to Kocharian. However, RPA is heading for the election campaign with its political rivals normally, calmly, in an organized manner”.
