LA City Council hosts Armenian Genocide commemoration event

The Los Angeles City Council conducted their annual Armenian Genocide Commemoration on April 20, in the Rotunda of City Hall, hosted by Council member Paul Krekorian.

Krekorian was joined by former City Council President Eric Garcetti, City Councilmember Dennis Zine, and City Controller Wendy Greuel, who each offered remarks remembering the Armenian Genocide.

Councilmember Krikorian honored activists for their years of leadership in the Armenian American community. Honorees were applauded for their efforts in educating and raising awareness about the Armenian Genocide. Recipients included ANCA Glendale Executive Director Elen Asatryan, ANCA San Fernando Valley West Chairman Nareg Kitsinian, Editor of Asbarez English Ara Khachatourian, film director Ara Soudjian, Pilibos student Natalie Kalbakian, Ferrahian Armenian School principal John Kossakian, and longtime ANCA activist Garen Yegparian, for raising awareness about the Armenian Genocide. Also honored were Ara Oshagan and Levon Parian of the Armenian Genocide Project, as well as the USC Shoah Foundation Institute and the Armenian Film Foundation.

Following the commemoration ceremony in the Rotunda, the Genocide was commemorated during a session of the L.A. City Council, where the honorees were again recognized for their efforts. Council members Jan Perry, Bill Rosendahl, Paul Koretz, and City Council President Herb Wesson made remarks, as well, Asbarez reported.
