The World Chess Organization – FIDE – declared year of 2004 the year of 9-th world chess champion Tigran Petrosian. According to a report of press service of the Armenian Chess Federation, which took the initiative, on this occasion FIDE intends to arrange various measures dedicated to the 75-th birthday of the famous grand master in Armenia and other countries during the current year. So, one of the greatest events in the world of chess will take place in Moscow on June 9-15 – “Petrosian’s” team headed by 13-th world champion Garry Kasparov will play against the world team. Besides Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Hakobian, Rafael Vahanian, Smbat Lputian, Peter Leko and Boris Gelfand will serve on the Petrosian team. The world team headed by Vishwanathan Anand will include Peter Svidler, Michael Adams, Etienne Bacro, Fransisco Valekho and Luc van Velli. This November two big tournaments dedicated to the memory of Tigran Petrosian – the Open International Tournament and then the Championship of Europe for quick chess – will be held in Yerevan. The tournament with the participation of the Armenian, Russian, Chinese and Indian teams will take place via Internet in December.
