NO VICTIMS AMONG ARMENIANS OF IRAQ, ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAID

At present the Iraqi Armenians are not inclined to leave the zone of the military operations. Armenian foreign minister Vardan Oskanian said in an interview to the Public Television Company of Armenia. Nevertheless, in his words, Yerevan does not rule out the opportunity that the situation might change abruptly. V. Oskanian emphasized that the Armenian foreign ministry did not possess any data on victims among the Armenian population in the course of the military operations in Iraq. He noted that he had held a meeting with representatives of international organizations operating in Armenia to discuss reception of refugees. “The Armenian government has already taken all possible measures to host refugees in the republic, the role and opportunity for international organization to participate in the process are only left to be specified,” – V. Oskanian said. In his words, the Armenian foreign ministry pays attention also to Armenians residing in the north of Iraq and considers that in case of Turkey’s invasion into Iraq the Armenian population of the region would also express desire to leave the region. He also reported that in some Arabic countries, in particular in Syria, Libya, Jordan, some 25 Armenians families, which had left Iraq before the military operations commenced, are amassed. “The foreign ministry obliged Armenian ambassadors in the region to take all measures to transport refugees to Armenia in case of need,” – V. Oskanian reported.
