An attempt of force solution of the Karabakh conflict would be a tragedy for Azerbaijan, stated US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Rino Harnish in an interview with Zerkalo Baku newspaper. In his words, in the course of the war Azerbaijan lost 30 thousand people, 750 thousand became refugees or temporarily displaced persons. Today each of the parties has a well-equipped army and in case of resumption of hostilities there will be more victims. Besides, economic progress since 1991 will be brought to naught, the Ambassador underscored. Answering the question whether the US considers solution of the conflict within the principle of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan possible, R. Harnish emphasized that the US has voted for the UN Security Council 4 resolutions on the conflict solution, which reflect the international community attitude towards the problem in question in a certain period. At the Lisbon summit he US voted for the settlement principles that were reflected in the statement of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office. “Thus, it is quite clear which principles officially guide the US in this question. But, according to Steven Mann, we are OSCE Minsk Group members and should act within the credentials issued to us. These credentials lie in that we should find an option of a just and long-term solution of the conflict,” R. Harnish noted.
