Turkey will hardly become a European Union member before 2015, EU Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen stated in a conversation with journalists. At the same time he emphasized that he is for talks with the Turkish Government to begin as soon as possible. As noted by G. Verheugen, “the economic state of Turkey and a range of other issues are far from perfection, which evidences that Ankara is not mature for EU membership yet.”
