Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul stated that the leaders of all the Baltic states support Turkey for accession to the European Union. According to Zaman Turkish newspaper, after the meetings with the Lithuanian leadership in Vilnius upon completion of his visit to the Baltic republics Abdullah Gul told journalists that although the Baltic states are small, their leaders have much influence in the EU and his visit, aimed at enlisting their support, was a success. To note, Commissioner for the EU Enlargement Gunter Verheugen holds the opinion that Ankara is not mature for joining the European Union yet and the country will hardly become a EU member before 2015.
