The European Commission recommends that Turkey’s accession negotiations be opened, Commission President Romano Prodi stated on October 6. In his words, though Turkey got the consent, the decision bears a conditional nature and in case Turkey digresses from the process, the EU can exercise its right to break negotiations one-sidedly. Besides, the EU imposed a strict condition on Turkey – to prevent the weakening of the reforms for defense of democracy and human rights, which were launched in the country. To remind, the participants of the EU summit scheduled for this December will decide whether to accept the Euro Commission’s recommendation or not. In case it is approved the date for the negotiations will be fixed. To note, Turkey is likely to enter the EU no earlier than in 2015.
