65 Armenian citizens of Iraq, who have lived in Armenia for at least 3 years (as provided by the law), were granted Armenian citizenship in 2002. As the consular department of the Armenian foreign ministry told “De Facto” agency, an inflow of Armenians from Iraq, although not a large-scale one, is observed recently. “One may expect the flow of Armenians from Iraq to increase due to the tense situation around that country. Thus, Armenia should be ready to receive them, although for many of them the fatherland will probably become a transit country on the way to other states,” – department head Armen Yeganian noted. In his words, the Armenian embassy in Iraq is given a special commission to maximally contribute to local Armenians in getting visas and leaving for the fatherland.
