UN WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME WARNS OF LACK OF FOOD AID TO ARMENIA

The UN World Food Program (WFP) warns of lack of food aid to Armenia. According to a press release of the organization headquarters, “Arka” agency reports, by the end of April WFP funds, provided for buying food for 300 thousand citizens of Armenia living below the poverty line, will be used up. For implementing the three-year program of food assistance to Armenia, the WFP got only $10 million out of the $32 million requested by the organization in 2001. The press release says in early 2003 the WFP received donations from Sweden, Switzerland and Japan for buying 497 tons of vegetable oil and 898 tons of flour. In the words of chief of the WFP office in Armenia Muzaffar Chuderi, “many addressees of the UN aid are children and the elderly, who do not have any sources of income and the international assistance is the only thing maintaining their survival.”
