“Sometimes accidental but pleasant coincidences take place”, Armenian President Robert Kocharian stated at the joint briefing with Georgian leader Mikhail Saakashvili, when responding to the question whether the opening of Verkhny Lars checkpoint at the Russian-Georgian border was a mere coincidence with his visit to Tbilisi. To remind, the checkpoint was closed by the Russian authorities after the tragic Beslan events causing serious problems for Armenia as the transport communication with Russia had been stopped. As the Armenian President noted, “the road functions in two directions and it is impossible that only one side incurred losses. Kocharian said he “is not inclined to dramatize the situation and wished it not to repeat and all the roads functioned well”. “The more are the roads the better. If the Turkish highway began functioning at the border with Armenia everything would be just wonderful in the region”, the President said jokingly. In his turn Mikhail Saakashvili stated that “it is necessary to avoid such problems in future for preserving good relations with Russia and access to the Russian market”.
