EU STILL RAISES QUESTION OF ARMENIAN NPP

The European Union intends to consider the issue on allocating Armenia all the essential funds for the search of substitutional facilities of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) as a separate component of a new program of cooperation with the CIS member-states. The EU is insisting on ANPP closing and is ready to assign 100 million euro for it. However Armenian experts consider that for the creation of alternative energy facilities Armenia will need almost1 billion euro. The ANPP is providing in general 30-40% of the energy processed in the country. According to the assessments of the experts, the station can function till 2016. To note, in September 2003 the ANPP passed to 5-year term trust administration of Inter RAO UES CJSC, the branch establishment of the RAO UES of Russia and Rosenergoatom concern.
The issue of the ANPP has a key importance for Armenia, as it is not only the pivot of the Armenian energy system but also possesses a great unrealized potential of energy export. The ANPP is as well of utmost importance in the context of struggle between the key players in the region.
