CEREMONY OF BEGINNING CONSTRUCTION OF ARMENIAN SEGMENT OF IRAN-ARMENIA GAS PIPELINE TO BE HELD

A ceremony devoted to the beginning of the construction of Meghri-Kajaran segment of Iran-Armenia gas pipeline will be held in the Sunik region of Armenia today. An Armenian delegation headed by Armenian Prime Minister Andranik Margarian will take part in the measure. The same day the Government leader will participate in the opening of the Iran-Armenia second electric main. An Iranian delegation headed by Energy Minister Habibollah Bitaraf will also arrive in Armenia. The building of the pipeline is planned to be finished by the end of 2006. According to estimates, the Armenian party investment will make some $90 million, while the Iranian party will spend about $120 million. It should be reminded that the building of the gas pipeline, spoken about since the 90-s, has been postponed many times. Initially the pipeline expected to have transit functions as well: to pump Iranian gas to Europe, which would grant Armenia an opportunity of considerable additional revenue. However, at the moment the gas pipeline transit functions are rather vague due to the unofficial resistance of the Russian party.
