AZERI OPPOSITION BOYCOTTS MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

Questioning the democracy of the upcoming municipal elections Azerbaijani opposition parties withdraw the majority of their nominees. Earlier the problems connected with the registration of the opposition candidates caused unrest in Nakhichevan. Yesterday Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev subjected to criticism the opposition leaders stating that “is they are so brave, let them organize a rally”. To remind, aspired to annex the Karabakh territories Azerbaijan promises to secure the rights of the Armenian population of the republic. However the situation with the civil rights and democracy in Azerbaijan is still a big problem. Judging from President Aliyev’s statement the problem still lies in the public mentality according to which citizens’ right for organizing rallies is equated to “bravery”, while juvenile statements made by the President are considered to be power manifestation.
