CANCELING OF CONFERENCE ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IN TURKEY – STRIKE AT HUMAN RIGHTS

109 professors of Istanbul Bogazici University have signed a joint statement demanding that the University rector to hold the conference on the Armenain Genocide that has been groundlessly postponed, reported the Yerkir newspaper referring to Turkish Milliyet. The authors of the statement are deeply concerned over the canceling of the conference scheduled May 25-27. As noted by the message, statements already made by the Turkish FM and a number of MPs over the holding of the conference on May 24 – a day before the planned beginning – are considered as encroachment upon the freedom of speech and will. «Hampering the not yet expressed opinion forms an even more dangerous and serious situation. The University will not allow the politics to govern the science,» the statement notes. It also says such statements by state officials, who consider dissent a betrayal – is a serious strike at the human and civil rights. The canceling of the conference under the pressure of some representatives of the Turkish Government and Parliament falls short of their own policy of clarification of the Armenian issue via public intercourse.
