One of the main subjects of discussion at yesterday’s meeting of Russian and Azeri Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev was the situation in the South Caucasus and the prospects of solution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, reported 525 Baku newspaper. Russian print pay attention to the goal of the recurrent working visit of the Azeri President to Russia was just to discuss the Karabakh issue. It is only noted that the Russian party has not changed its attitude towards the conflict and considers the parties to conflict coming to a compromise a necessary condition for conflict settlement. Russia is not going to influence any of the parties over solution of the problem and is simultaneously ready to assume the role of guarantor of any arrangement between the parties. When considering the situation in the South Caucasus, the Russian and Azeri Presidents to all appearance did not omit a question of special concern to official Baku lately – the transfer of military equipment from Russian bases in Georgia to Armenia. It should be reminded that earlier Azeri Foreign Ministry sent an official note to the Russian party, however Moscow’s explanations did not satisfy Baku. The media did not report the results of the meeting of the Presidents in this respect. However, yesterday Russian media spread the recurrent statement of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov over the issue. The Russian FM again stated that the transfer of part of the military equipment from Georgia to the Russian base in Gyumri does not mean conveying the arms to Armenia and the process cannot have any impact on the military balance available in the region.
