Ankara is preparing for the EU membership negotiations to start October 3, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul stated. In his words, Turkey is on the last lap at present and it is extremely important to pass it carefully. “One should keep in mind that both Turkey and Europe closely watch the process. We hope that the negotiations will open according to the schedule, on October 3,” Abdullah Gul said. According to him, there is no ground to delay the talks. “Ankara has complied with all the demands advanced by the European Union”, he added. When asked to comment on Turkey’s position on opening Turkish ports for Cypriot administration Mr. Gul said, “There is a legal basis for discussing the issue with the customs union framework. However the Turkey-EU process has nothing to do with these discrepancies”, Yerkir Online reported.
