Prospects of “orange revolution” in Armenia is very problematic. The opposition is separated, the authorities are rather consolidated, stated President of the Union of Armenians of Russia and World Armenian Congress Ara Abrahamyan, reported Rossiyskaya Gazeta. In his words, Armenia’s problem does not lie in some Western-leaning “liberals” may substitute for the ruling authorities and announce a policy line inclined to Washington, the NATO, EU etc. The point is that authorities in Armenia, opposition and the society expect more active participation of Russia in the region, he emphasized. This first of all refers to factories Russia received instead of debt repayment, Mr. Abrahamyan stated. In his words, it is important for Russia to take part in the building of the gas pipeline and other objects in Armenia. Besides Russian involvement in settling the Armenian-Turkish relations would have been of huge importance, the UAR leader added. Many people in Armenia consider it rather strange that Russia, on whose side Armenians fought against the Ottoman Empire (and this was used by Turks to commit the Armenian Genocide), has withdrawn itself from the Armenian-Turkish settlement process. The initiative is in fact in Washington’s hands. The EU and some other European states have some participation in it as well. Armenia expects Russia to have more active participation in the Karabakh issue, Ara Abrahamyan supposes. In his words, some public and political circles consider Russia does not make enough efforts to open the railway through Georgia. Some people in Russia state as if the Armenian authorities are insufficiently active in raising these issues before their Georgian colleagues, who on the plea of “punishing” Abkhazia punish Armenia in fact. It is necessary to activate the Armenian-Russian consultations to find solutions to these urgent economic and political issues, for the region to turn into a peace zone, that of implementation of large-scale economic and infrastructure projects after the withdrawal of Russian bases from Georgia, Abrahamyan said.
