The interpreter of the International Election Observation Mission committed linguistic, lexical and other blunders and distorted the words of the OSCE PA President when translating these at a news conference, Azeri President’s Spokesman Azer Gasymov stated. In his words, the interpreter translated the phrase of the OSCE PA President as follows: “The election held yesterday fell short of the commitments promoted by the OSCE and current international standards of democratic election.” The correct translation of the sentence is: “Yesterday’s elections fell short of a number of commitments promoted by the OSCE and Council of Europe standards of democratic elections.” Actions of the kind, in the Spokesman’s words, aim at forming an erroneous perception in the public opinion.
“Unfortunately, during the preliminary assessment of such an important process as election, a mistake was made when conveying preliminary information,” he said remarking, “when using local interpreters some embassies, missions, international organizations” do not attach importance to professionalism of the interpreters, which finally results in such blunders. Gasymov said the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were held in a democratic and transparent atmosphere and the people were able to express their will. In his opinion the fact that the voting process was positive in 87% of electoral districts observed by the international mission is a high indicator, reported Trend agency.
