President of the NATO PA Pierre Lellouche stated that in future one of the challenges for NATO will be the stability in the regions surrounding Europe, especially the Muslim ones. “This stability is very important and should be achieved not also by means of obligatory actions but also via economic and democratic methods, since poverty and indifference lay in the basis of political abuse of religion and consequently of terrorism,” Mr. Lellouche stated at the annual NATO PA session that opened in Copenhagen November 11. He also noted that the international community should quickly react to the problems available in the security sphere. “We must be able to undertake preventive steps and try to build democratic and economic models, which will encourage the youth as regard the future. Otherwise the developments will lead to violence,” he said. The sitting of the NATO-Russia interparliamentary commission was held on the first session day. The participants discussed the situation in the South Caucasus and Russia’s influence on the region, RFE/RL reported.
