Armenian Oppositionist Accuses PACE in Dual Standards

November 28 National Unity Armenian oppositionist party will present its conclusion on the activities of PACE observers in the course of the referendum on constitutional amendments in Armenia, party leader Artashes Geghamyan stated at a news conference in Yerevan November 27. In his words, international organizations pursue a dual policy. “We are able to assess the democratic record of Armenia ourselves,” the oppositionist stated, urging international organizations to cease their activities based on dual standards.

Geghamyan confirmed the fact that the National Unity members boycott the constitutional referendum and party representatives do not take part in the work of district election commissions and the CEC of Armenia. “Our party members hold monitoring and according to their data the referendum attendance will make 8-10%. According to the President’s Administration it will make 45%,” the oppositionist stated. Meanwhile, according to CEC data the constituency attendance made 26.1% as of 2:00 p.m. The number of electors in Armenia makes 2 million 301 thousand 828 persons. In Geghamyan’s words, “the authorities by their actions damage Armenia’s image and lead the country to a collapse, taking into account that the Nagorno Karabakh issue will be solved in 2006.” “Kocharian is surrounded with liars and it is very dangerous,” the National Unity leader considers. It should be noted that Geghamyan’s party does not take part in the rallies of the united opposition, held in the Liberty Square in Yerevan, reported IA Regnum.
