UN General Committee to Consider Issue of Protracted Conflicts in South Caucasus

UN General Committee will consider a proposal made by GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova) regional organization for the UN General Assembly 60th session agenda to include the issue of Protracted Conflicts in the Black Sea and South Caucasian regions and their consequences for international peace, security and development. Georgian Permanent Representative to the UN Revaz Adamia told journalists about it. In his words, a joint letter of permanent representatives of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova, addressed to the UN November 22, contains a request to include regional conflicts in the UN General Assembly 60th session agenda. Adamia explained that the General Committee does not consider the essence of the issue, but considers the procedure. “Thus one no difficulties are forecasted in this respect, though it is clear that some countries will be against it,” Adamia remarked.

According to the UN News Center, an explanatory note attached to the letter addressed to the UN General Assembly President underscores that “protracted conflicts in Moldova, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno Karabakh pose serious threat to international peace and seucrity, threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of three UN member states.” It notes that “these conflicts resulted in losing control over considerable parts of territory of those states and hamper economic and social development,” reported Trend agency.
