January 19 head of rail departments of Russia, Georgia and Armenia Vladimir Yakunin, Irakli Ezugbaya and Ararat Khrimyan agreed in Moscow to implement a business plan to restore Sochi-Tbilisi rail communication through Abkhazia. When the project is implemented the rail communication between Russia and Armenia, which has stopped since 1993 owing to the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, will be restored. Vladimir Yakunin told the Gudok newspaper that an International Consortium of «Rail Departments of Russia, Armenia and Georgia will be formed with participation of Abkhaz railway men.» Azerbaijan’s participation in the project is not ruled out. «It will be a commercial structure and we invite interested companies to take part in it,» Yakunin said. In his words, a working group will be formed soon that will engage in organization of the Consortium, reported RFE/RL.
