European Armenian Federation Called upon European Commission to Audit Turkish Legislation

European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) expressed its satisfaction over dropping of charges against Orhan Pamuk. The EAFJD meanwhile reminded that many others still are harassed in Turkey for same reasons and pointed out that the problem lays with Turkish legislation that allows restriction of free expression. “Every time Europe yields from its responsibilities, Turkey interprets is as encouragement for violating human rights,” EAFJD Director Laurent Leylekian said. “When the EU clearly demands the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Ankara will have to stop its denialist policies.” The EAFJD also called the European Commission to exercise more efforts and undertake a general audit of the Turkish legislation and judiciary practice, including its constitution and laws, which up till now make the Armenian massacres look legal.
