ANCA: Ankara’s Threats Exaggerated

The Armenian National Committee of America basing on the right of freedom of information has obtained the U.S. State Department’s diplomatic communiques on the Armenian Genocide. These documents prove that the Turkish government’s threats in case of recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Washington are exaggerated. ANCA reports that several hundreds of pages party marked as secret maintain information on the U.S. State Department’s activities in 2002 as regards the Armenian Genocide Resolution that was awaiting discussion in the House of Representatives but was removed from the agenda by President Clinton’s decree, since “the adoption of the resolution could have negative consequences for the United States.” Part of the documents refers to the ties between the Armenian-Turkish commission on reconciliation and the U.S. Department of State. “These documents prove that U.S. officials in autumn 2002 were informed that Turkey’s threats are groundless but they however misinformed the Congress and the American society when stating that the adoption of the Armenian Genocide Resolution jeopardizes the American-Turkish relations,” ANCA Executive Director Ara Hamparian stated.
