Rambouillet May Be Moment of Truth in Karabakh Settlement

OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs expect that major principles, on which following talks and future efforts to settle the Nagorno Karabakh conflict are to be based, will be passed at the Rambouillet meeting, stated French Ambassador Bernard Fassier at a news conference in the French MFA. “Making decisions at once means to endanger the entire negotiation process. Rambouillet may become a moment of truth that will open a new phase in the talks,” Bernard Fassier said. In his words, there were no failures in the MG activities, except the Paris principles adopted in 2001 that were to be signed in Key West. The diplomat added that the negotiation process should be guided by two international principles: territorial integrity for Azerbaijan and people’s right to self-determination for Armenia. “It is expected to move towards compromises,” Fassier stated. He believes an option of gradual withdrawal of Armenian troops from the “occupied territories” may be proposed that will be followed by a referendum over the NK status. “This will happen when both Armenian and Azeri communities of Karabakh are able to voice their opinions,” the mediator said, reported RFE/RL.
