Azeris Ask UN for «Divided Nation» Status

Yesterday the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC) appealed to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for provision of divided nation status to Azerbaijan. The appeal reads that “the territory of Azerbaijan was divided into several administrative parts 170 years ago, which underwent obligatory separation. The statement also says, “Unification intentions of Azerbaijani people underwent Russian and Iranian pressure every time and Azerbaijan sacrificed many shahids on this way.” “Azerbaijanis are deprived of living in their historic lands normally now, too. Our compatriots living in the Southern Azerbaijan in Iran can not exercise their simple human rights. The international community shuts its eye to this injustice and does not support the democratic struggle of Azerbaijani people. Taking these into account, World Azerbaijanis ask the UN for a status of “a divided nation.” APA agency reports.
