Beginning on January 9, 2003 Russia will close its air space for the flights of Armenian Airlines, which owes $3 million to the Russian air communication management. As the civil aviation state board of the Russian ministry of transport told ITAR-TASS agency, the Russian party has always shown understanding to the financial problems of the Armenian air company and, taking into account the interests of passengers, tried not to resort to extreme measures. Nevertheless, a representative of the transport department noted, this autumn the Armenian Airlines’ debt to the Russian air-navigation service began increasing again. In his words, all attempts to find a mutually acceptable solution ended in “the airlines making declarative statements without concrete payments and presentation of terms of paying off the debt.”
