There are no ethnic conflicts in Samtskhe-Javakhetia region of Georgia. As reported by “Arminfo” agency, director of International Conflict Studies center, professor Georgy Khutsiashvili stated it at “Human rights protection as basis for inter-ethnic concord” conference in Tbilisi. At the same time he noted the locals’ dissatisfaction with the unstable social and economic situation in the region. In Khutsiashvili’s opinion, an important factor of instability is the presence of the Russian military base, whose withdrawal can affect the situation in the region favorably. Having agreed with the fact that many local Armenians earn their living working exactly at the Russian military base, Khutsiashvili emphasized the importance for the Georgian authorities to pursue a more active social and economic policy in Samtskhe-Javakhetia, which, in his opinion, is not observed until now.
