The Greek-Armenian National Presbytery, the Armenian Catholic Church, and a number of organizations have expressed support for the movement "Tavush for Motherland" led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan.
"We have been following the events in our homeland for days, hearing about the demarcation process with deep concern,” the organizations said in a statement on Friday, May 10.
“At this critical juncture, we express our support for all efforts aimed at protecting our values, maintaining the territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Armenia, and strengthening our national unity.”
41 people were detained in Yerevan on Saturday, as people demanding Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s resignation stage campaigns of civil disobedience across the Armenian capital.
Saturday marks the third day of demonstrations led by Galstanyan and backed by virtually all Armenian opposition groups.
Galstanyan on Friday reiterated those demands as he addressed the protesters in the city’s central Republic Square in the evening. He charged that Pashinyan lost legitimacy after deciding to hand over several disputed border areas to Azerbaijan. He pointed out that the premier had pledged not to make such concessions in the run-up to the last general elections held in 2021.
