ARMENIAN CITIZEN ACCUSED OF BUYING AND ATTEMPTING TO SELL PORTABLE ANTI-AIRCRAFT COMPLEXES SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS OF DEPRIVATION OF LIBERTY

Armenian citizen Artur Melikian, accused of attempting to sell ammunition abroad, is sentenced to 15 years of deprivation of liberty. Melikian is declared guilty in inveigling into agreement servicemen, who are also considered regarding the same case, and buying 19 missiles from them. It is known that he has bought the missiles at the price of $1.5 – 4 thousand each, while their real cost at the armament market runs up to 50 thousand. As reported by “Arminfo” agency, in the course of the investigation murders of two citizens – Svetlana Martirosova and her son Georgy Martirosian – committed by Melikian were also unveiled. In December 1999 in the custom service of Bagratashen the officers of the Ministry of National Security filed a criminal suit for attempt of smuggling against another three individuals considered regarding the same case. The inquest showed that the discovered cargo consisted of 12 warheads of 9M-39 missiles of “Igla” portable anti-aircraft missile complex. The same day in the course of the search 13 missile containers were found, one of which contained a warhead and 6 missiles. The eight officers of the Ministry of Defense engaged in the case are sentenced to various imprisonment terms – from three to seven years. Another three persons considered regarding the same case are amnestied.
